1969 I M Vijayan, former professional Indian football player who also captained the Indian national football team, was born.
1982 Doordarshan started the test run of India's first colour TV telecast.

1507 Martin Waldseemuller, a German geographer working at a small college in Eastern France, labeled the New World "America," for the first time in his book Cosmographiae Introductio, and gave Amerigo Vespucci (who died in 1512) credit for discovering it.
1719 Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe was published in London. The book was based on the story of Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721), a man who was voluntarily put ashore on a desert island from 1704 to 1709.
1859 Construction of the Suez Canal began. The waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea became the shortest sea link between Europe and Asia.
1874 Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his creation of a practical radio wave-based wireless telegraph system, was born.
1878 Anna Sewell, English novelist, known as the author of the 1877 novel Black Beauty, her only published work, was born. Her book is considered one of the top ten best selling novels for children, although the author intended the work for an adult audience.
1927 Alberto Uderzo, French comic book artist and scriptwriter, was born. He is best known as the co-creator and illustrator of the Astérix series in collaboration with René Goscinny.
1953 The double helix structure of DNA described for the first time in an article published by Francis Crick and James D Watson in Nature.
1960 First submerged circumnavigation of Earth completed by USS submarine Triton in 60 days, 21 hours.
1983 The German news magazine Stern announced discovery of Adolf Hitler's diaries. The documents were later exposed as forgeries, triggering one of the most spectacular media scandals in history. Experts believe that Hitler never kept a diary.
1990 The Hubble Space Telescope, a sophisticated optical observatory built in the United States under the supervision of NASA, was sent into orbit by the crew of the space shuttle Discovery.
1992 Islamic forces took over most of Kabul, Afghanistan after the Soviet-controlled government collapsed.
⭐ Significance
World Malaria Day is an international observance which recognizes global efforts to control malaria. Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.
