1955 Jim Corbett, British hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author who hunted a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India, died in Nyeri, Kenya.
1975 Aryabhata was India's first satellite, named after the famous Indian astronomer, was launched on from Kapustin Yar, a Soviet rocket launch and development site.

1824 Lord Byron, English poet and peer, died. One of the leading figures of the Romantic movement, Byron is regarded as one of the greatest English poets. He remains widely read and influential.
1882 Charles Darwin, English naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary biology, died.
1897 The Boston Marathon, the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon, was run for the first time.
1900 Richard Hughes, British writer of poems, short stories, novels and plays, was born.
1928 The final volume of the Oxford English Dictionary was published in London. The dictionary, published under the imposing name A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles, contained over 400,000 words and phrases in ten volumes.
