1849 The United Kingdom annexes the Punjab.
1857 Mangal Pandey, Indian soldier, attacked and injured his British sergeant and wounded an adjutant at Barrackpore ground near Kolkata, sparking off the Sepoy Mutiny, considered by many as the First War of Independence.
1913 Bhawani Prasad Mishra, Hindi poet and author, was born in Hoshangabad district in erstwhile Central Province of British India. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972 for his book Buni Hui Rassi.
1943 Laxman Nayak, great freedom fighter of Odisha, was hanged in Brahmapur jail.
1970 Union Government revises the percentage of reservation in service for SC/STs from 12.5% to 15%.
1999 A massive earthquake in the Garhwal region of Uttar Pradesh in the inner Himalayas claims 85 lives and more than 130 injured.

1795 Beethoven, aged 24, debuted as pianist in Vienna.
1798 Republic of Switzerland was formed.
1827 Composer Ludwig van Beethoven was buried in Vienna amidst a crowd of over 10,000 mourners.
1867 The North America Act was passed by the British parliament, creating the dominion of Canada.
1943 During World War 2, rationing of meat, cheese, butter and cooking oils goes into effect in US.
1974 In Xi'an, China, the Terracotta Army, a collection of some 8000 soldier sculptures, depicting Emperor Qin Shi Huang's army, was located by local farmers when they were digging a water well.
1975 Egyptian president Anwar Sadat declared that he will reopen the Suez Canal on June 5, 1975. Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez and dividing Africa and Asia. The canal is a route of trade between Europe and Asia. It was closed at the beginning of the Six-Day War on 5 June 1967.
2001 An oil tanker collided with a freighter in the Baltic Sea and some 550,000 gallons of oil were spilled and drifted toward Denmark.
2004 Ireland becomes the first country to ban smoking in all workplaces.
2008 370 cities of the world started celebrating Earth Hour, which is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund. The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
