Did you know explorer and author Jason Lewis became the first person to complete a human-powered circumnavigation of the globe? He completed his journey biking, walking and rollerblading on land and kayaking, swimming, rowing and using a specially-designed pedal-powered boat to cross the waters. A pioneer who champions carbon-neutral travel, the Yorkshire native has spoken about protecting the environment at more than 900 schools in 37 countries.

Did you know you can tell if an egg is old based on whether it floats in water? It sounds phony, but it’s time-tested. If an egg floats when you set it in water, then it’s old; if it sinks, it’s a fresher egg and you’re good to go.

Did you know that Emperor Ashoka’s edicts were not only carved in Sanskrit, but in many local dialects? Ashoka shared his new outlook on life through edicts carved into stones and pillars located around the country at pilgrimage sites and along busy trade routes. They were not carved in Sanskrit—the official state language—but in local dialects, so that the messages could be widely understood. For example, an edict near modern-day Kandahar in Afghanistan, an area that had been under Alexander the Great’s control for a period of time, is written in Greek and Aramaic.

Did you know people rarely used to smile in photos? Smiling in photos is said to have originated from a Kodak advertising scheme that focused on capturing moments of happiness with the product. Since then, it’s been the norm to grin into the camera. A study comparing yearbook photos from 1905 to 2005 showed an increase of lip curvature over time.

Did you know India was the first country to mine diamonds? From the 4th century BC for around 1,000 years, India was the only source of diamonds in the world. The original diamonds were found in the Krishna River Delta. In the 18th century, more diamond deposits were discovered in Brazil, and soon after, in South Africa, adding to the market of diamonds.
