1915 Maqbool Fida Husain, better known as M. F. Husain, one of the most celebrated and internationally recognised Indian artists of the 20th century, was born.

1934 Gandhiji announced that he would retire from politics from October 1 to engage himself in the development of village industries, Harijan service and education through basic crafts.

1948 The Nizam of Hyderabad surrenders his sovereignty over the Hyderabad State and joins the Indian Union.

1950 Birth of Indian politician and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

1960 Agreement reached with Pakistan on the distribution of the River Indus and its tributaries. The Indus, which begins in Indian-controlled Kashmir and flows through Pakistan on its way to the sea, is Pakistan's primary freshwater source—on which 90 percent of its agriculture depends—and a critical outlet of hydro-power generation for both countries.

1997 U-233 fueled Kalpakkam Mini Reactor (KAMINI), commissioned in 1989, jointly designed and built by the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) and the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (ICGAR), reached full power operation of 30KW.

2004 Tamil becomes the first language to get the status of a classical language of India. Currently, six languages enjoy the 'Classical' status: Tamil (2004), Sanskrit (2005), Kannada (2008), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013), and Odia (2014).

1598 Dutch sailors discover island of Mauritius.

1683 Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek is the first to report the existence of bacteria. He writes a letter to the Royal Society describing "animalcules", later known as protozoa.

1908 Lt. Thomas Selfridge, a passenger in a plane piloted by Orville Wright, became the first airplane fatality when the craft crashed.

1954 Lord of the Flies by William Golding is published by Faber and Faber in London.

1991 The first version of the Linux kernel (0.01) is released to the Internet.
