1849 Poet-writer Edgar Allan Poe died at age 40. He is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.

1931 Desmond Tutu, South African Anglican cleric and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist, was born.

1949 A constitution went into effect in the Soviet occupation zone of Germany that formed the country of East Germany, which existed alongside West Germany until 1990, when the two Germanys reunited.

1952 Russian politician Vladimir Putin, who served as president and prime minister of Russia, was born.

2001 Triggered by the September 11 attacks, the Afghanistan War began, as U.S. and British warplanes started bombing Taliban targets.

2008 Asteroid 2008 TC3 impacts the Earth over Sudan, the first time an asteroid impact is detected prior to its entry into earth's atmosphere. It was an 80-tonne, 4.1-meter diameter asteroid and it exploded at an estimated 37 kilometers above the Nubian Desert in Sudan.
