1901 G Sankara Kurup, poet, essayist and literary critic of Malayalam literature, was born in Nayathode, Angamaly. Known as one of the greats of Malayalam poetry, he was the first recipient of the Jnanpith Award―the highest Indian literary honor.
1947 In Britain an announcement was made in the House of Commons that India was to be partitioned and that independence would follow.
🌎 Elsewhere
1492 German geographer Martin Behaim presented the world's first globe, calling it Erdapfel, or Earth Apple. It is kept in a darkened room at the German National Museum in Nuremberg, Germany.
1923 In Italy, dictator Benito Mussolini granted women the right to vote.
1924 Franz Kafka, German-speaking Bohemian novelist and short-story writer, died. He is widely regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature. His work fuses elements of realism and the fantastic.
