1898 Dr. Paul-Louis Simond discovered the connections between rats, fleas and humans in the transmittance of the Plague in Bombay (now Mumbai).

1970 Har Gobind Khorana, Indian-American chemist at the University of Wisconsin, announced the synthesis of the first artificial gene.

2004 Dom Moraes, editor, essayist, biographer, and inveterate traveler who was one of the best-known English-language poets of India, died in Mumbai.

2014 Telangana was officially became the 29th state of India, formed by separating 10 districts from the north-western part of Andhra Pradesh.

1840 English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, who set much of his work in Wessex, an imaginary county in southwestern England, was born.
