1857 Mutineers of the 1857 revolt against the British seized Delhi.
1895 Jiddu Krishnamurti, philosopher, speaker and writer, was born.
1918 Mrinalini Sarabhai, classical dancer, choreographer and instructor, was born.
1998 India set off the first of three underground atomic blasts in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan near the Pakistan border, its first nuclear tests in 24 years. A P J Abdul Kalam led the teams of scientists who developed missiles designed for India's atomic warheads. On May 13, 1998, India officially declared itself a nuclear power.
1999 Supreme Court confirms the death sentence on four of the 26 accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, reduces to life imprisonment the sentence on three others and acquits the remaining 19.
2005 India and Pakistan agreed to start a bus service between the cities of Lahore and Amritsar, and share information on fishermen in each other's custody.

1904 Salvador Dali, surrealist painter, was born in Figueres, Spain.
1916 Albert Einstein's paper "The Basis of the General Theory of Relativity" was published.
1918 Richard Feynman, American theoretical physicist, was born. He is known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as his work in particle physics for which he proposed the parton model.
1949 Siam changed its named to Thailand.
1997 IBM's The Deep Blue defeated grandmaster Garry Kasparov to win a six-game chess match between man and computer in New York.
