1883 Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Indian politician, activist, and writer, was born. He developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva while imprisoned at Ratnagiri in 1922.
1946 K Satchidanandan, poet and critic, writing in Malayalam and English, was born. A pioneer of modern poetry in Malayalam, a bilingual literary critic, playwright, editor, columnist and translator, he is the former editor of Indian Literature journal and the former secretary of Sahitya Akademi.

1843 Noah Webster, American lexicographer known for his American Spelling Book and his American Dictionary of the English Language, died.
1849 Anne Brontë, English novelist and poet, and the youngest member of the Brontë literary family, died.
1908 Ian Fleming, author of James Bond novels, was born in Mayfair, London. He also wrote the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1964).
1961 Amnesty International, one of the world's most influential human rights organizations, was founded.
2014 Maya Angelou, American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist, died.
