1904 Jamsetji Tata, Indian pioneer industrialist who founded the Tata Group, India's biggest conglomerate company, died in Bad Nauheim, Germany. Named the greatest philanthropist of the last century by several polls and ranking lists, he also established the city of Jamshedpur.
1908 Manik Bandyopadhyay, Indian Litterateur regarded as one of the major figures of 20th century Bengali literature, was born.
1934 Ruskin Bond, Anglo-Indian author, was born in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. His first novel, The Room on the Roof, received the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957.
1958 Jadunath Sarkar, prominent Indian historian and a specialist on the Mughal dynasty, died in Kolkata.
1979 Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Hindi novelist, literary historian, essayist, critic and scholar, died in Delhi. He penned numerous novels, collections of essays, historical research on medieval religious movements of India especially Kabir and Natha Sampradaya, and historical outlines of Hindi literature.
2004 E K Nayanar, politician of the Communist Party of India or CPI and former Chief Minister of Kerala, died in New Delhi. He served three terms as the Chief Minister of Kerala for a total of 10 years, 11 months and 22 days, thus making him the longest-serving holder of that office.
2008 Vijay Tendulkar, leading Marathi playwright, movie and television writer, literary essayist, political journalist, and social commentator, died in Pune. He is one of India’s greatest playwrights, whose hard-hitting Marathi plays established him as an irreverent but brilliant writer of plays with contemporary, unconventional themes.

1743 Jean-Pierre Christin invented the Celsius thermometer.
1910 Halley's comet passed Earth with a spectacular show. The comet flew by about 13.9 million miles (22.4 million kilometers) from Earth, which is about one-fifteenth the distance between Earth and the sun. The comet was captured on camera for the first time.
1935 T E Lawrence (also known as "Lawrence of Arabia"), British author and soldier, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash.
